Photo Exhibit of On the Outside

A photo exhibit is available of portraits of the people featured in the book, along with excerpts from their stories. The full exhibit includes 13 panels, approximately 2x3 feet. The exhibit often accompanies the one-act play about the character, Darlene.

"I've been shooting photos since 1957 for newspapers, businesses, ad agencies and the like," says On the Outside photographer Chuck Wyrostok. "Most don't leave lasting memories. The indelible ones quickly come to mind: the Harlem Riots in 1964; meeting Bobby Kennedy; JFK's funeral; the quilters at Cabin Creek. And, now, the "On the Outside" people.

"I'd done very little work with people with disabilities before, but I was comfortable with the challenge I perceived it to be. By the end, I had new definitions for the word "challenge". Each person's distinct history, personality, and disability made each photo session unpredictable and surprising. Each person left a lasting impression. The human spirit, in them and their families, is really the best of what we all are."
